In order to understand the reinforcing effects on the pull-out resistance of a drilled shaft reinforced by soil nails. a series of pull-out was conducted on model reinforced drilled shafts with various reinforcing types of soil nails. Inclination angle, number of levels, number of soil nails per level, and longitudinal arrangement of soil nails were selected as test variables in this study. The reinforced drilled shafts were installed in dense sand to an embedded depth of 350 mm. The results obtained from this study indicated that reinforcing efficiency of soil nails was improved with an increase in inclination angle. As the inclination angle of the reinforcing soil nails decreased, reinforcing effects were severely affected by other test variables. The measured bending moments and axial forces developed along the instrumented soil nails for different inclination angles and reinforcing levels were also discussed in this paper. No obvious reinforcing effects of soil nails on the compression behavior of model reinforced piles were observed from the additional compression tests.
