The installation of the Disaster Management Center (DMC)and new budget classification on disaster and safety related budget in 2015 allowed the central government to manage disaster and safety related budget in a comprehensive manner. Based on the information coming from the separate budget classification, this study attempts to analyze the trends of disaster and safety related budget along with disaster type, activities, response stage, and departments during the time period of FY 2015-2019. The analysis demonstrates that the total size of disaster and safety budget does not appear to grow sizably over the period, although the public safety issue is big concern to most Koreans. When the disaster and safety related budget was classified along with disaster types, social and safety accident (41.5%) made up the largest portion in FY 2019, followed by natural disaster (31.4%), disaster and safety in general (26.9%). When classified along with activities, disaster prevention (46.2%), disaster safety system operation (28.4%), financial reserve (19.5%), education, training, advertisement (0.8%) was followed. When classified along with response stage, preparation made up almost the half (49.7%), followed by prevention (36.7%), recovery (6.1%). The analysis also shows that the Department of Land and Housing (25.2%), Public Administration and Safety (15.5%), Agriculture and Fishery (13.3%) are the big 3 in the allocation of the disaster safety management budget.
