What is good literature? One that gives pleasure. Do you have any other thing that is better than this? If we agree, none in the present world and time is good literature. There seem to be only bad criticisms and bad critics. William Butler Yeats is a good writer in that very sense. Does his poetry or prose not give pleasure and solace? His is also a thing that’s like air—so aery that it slips through the fingers of logic and so incomprehensible that it’s mysterious and beautiful over there, not here, a thing behind the ever-changing cumuli. Tae Ho Han, a philosopher poet, offers a reading of The Shadowy Waters. It is interesting and invites our imagination. In today’s world Nationalism is spreading like cancer. How could we deal with this today? Maybe we could end up with fire or ice, at the end of the wars called Nationalism. When Yeats lived in Ireland, there seems to have been reason good enough to support what he called Cultural Nationalism. Whether it’s cultural or not, it now is too dangerous for a nation to claim her own nationalism. In the same context, Postcolonialism is to be done with sooner than later. In the same context, however, Bennett Fu’s essay on Yeats and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, an African writer, is timely and worthy of note. It is a well researched and beautifully written essay. Young Suck Rhee offers a book review on Jahan Ramazani’s book on contemporary poets, questioning the validity of some writers who seem to be good writers because they offer new poetry: something new is always good? That is the question. Rhee also offers a possibility of reading Yeats from the perspective of Noh. It suggests not a work to work comparison, but a study of how a poet could change over time with contact with an influence compatible to his temperament. The rest also are of importance and may be interesting to many: Yeats’s poetry examined by Amitabh Roy, Hyun-Ho Shin, Lijun Zu with Ki Ho Yun, Jooseong Kim, and Ilhwan Yoon; Yeats’s plays by Beau La Rhee and Dohyun Rim; Yeats and Heaney by Sung Sook Hong; Yeats and Defoe by Yunju Choi and Yoo Jin Choi; Ezra Pound and Dante Alighieri by Joon Seog Ko. We are grateful to all the authors who wrote excellent essays for this issue. We are open to all the scholars and students, from all over the world, who specialize in William Butler Yeats and Modernist literature.
