Christa Wolf’s Cassandra and Maryse Condé’s I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem reinvent stories of the mythical and legendary women figures silenced and distorted in the official documents through a dreamer’s work, that is, imaginary reconstructions of the past for what might have been. In restoring these women figures to fill in the gaps of history, Wolf and Condé do not only resuscitate them as knowing or speaking subjects, but also describe their achievement of self-knowledge as a process of establishing an intersubjective relationship with others. The two novels insert the reminiscences of Cassandra and Tituba into their autobiographical stories, which include their encounters with other women whose reactions to the male-oriented societal structure reveal a set of differences in women’s possible agendas for feminism. The two novels also invite a dynamic reading based on the complex play of time in which the future of the recollected story turns into the reading present.
