This study aims to understand the ambivalent relationship between Stephen Dedalus and Buck Mulligan in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Stephen and Mulligan manifest very opposed attitudes towards each other. The ironies of hospitality and betrayal subtly mediate and separate the two friends simultaneously. In particular, this article pursues Stephen’s keen consciousness and complicated psychological responses to the friendship in relation with various backgrounds, such as Irish history and politics. Although Stephen sees through Mulligan the betrayer, he nevertheless maintains their friendship. The tolerance demonstrated by Stephen ultimately suggests the redeeming value of coexistence in this work.
