This study examines the perspectives of ancient Greeks on plants and attempts to reconstruct their meanings based on the literature and archaeological material on olives trees, pomegranates, vine trees, and acanthus. Plants and trees were not only used in various ways by Greeks but also represented the cycle of nature and life, symbolizing strong fertility and abundance. Wreaths made of olive branches – a symbol of Athens and its guardian Athena – crowned the heads of victors of festivals and contests throughout Greece to commemorate their heroic triumph. Pomegranates, as a symbol of Hera and Demeter, represented fertility, abundance, and productivity, and also denoted the underworld of Hades in connection with Persephone. The vine tree was a feature of Dionysus and a symbol of the influence of Dionysus and wine. Acanthus was a popular motif used in the columns of temples and various buildings as well as funeral monument in tombs due to its symbolic association with Acanthus’ strong vitality and resurrection. The four plants examined through ancient Greek literary and archaeological sources were closely related to a specific god and was used as a symbol of the god’s divinity or embodied sacred meaning themselves due to their fertility and vitality or heroic victories in contests.
