Historically, hats have been worn to protect the head from the environment. As time progressed, it was a symbol of not only the purpose of protection but also the status, economic power, religion, nationality, political beliefs and occupation of each individual. In modern society, hats are added to the decorative function with the development of fashion, so that everyone of all ages are wearing them as fashion accessories. In the 21st century, folk dress has the value of new re-creation in terms of internationalization and has a multifaceted use. Therefore, in modern times, it is necessary to develop a functional and practical hat design that can use the tradition and fit the world. It is very meaningful to present new creative possibilities based on traditions that fit the era of internationalization. In this study, we reviewed the Central Asian traditional hats, called ‘Gwanmo’, that have various forms due to the religious and cultural influences of Muslims, and designed 6 modern hats for creative design by utilizing their formative characteristics. First, the design using tubular Gwanmo was reborn as a modern and practical hat by using some form changes and traditional patterns. Secondly, the design using conical Gwanmo adds new formativeness and enables a special design that gives emotional fashion and fun. Third, the design using hooded Gwanmo was recreated as a unique design that is very ethnic and stylish. As such, the modern hat design using the traditional Gwanmo is presented in various forms that are not uniform, and it is meaningful to suggest the possibility of using it as a new design to stimulate emotion. In the future, we hope that the research on traditional costumes of various regions at home and abroad and the design development will follow.
