Reading Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s The Trail of the Serpent, this essay focuses on her literary representation of the self-made man figure in the character of Jabez North. Not a conventional protagonist, North, the archetypical villain, becomes the storytelling force as he vaults up from the bottom rung of the social ladder and eventually attains his life objective of colossal wealth and social recognition. In dealing with North’s social climbing, Braddon constructs North as a lower-class young man who, with his diligence and exactness, likely follows Victorian popular beliefs in self-making. As the narrative proceeds, Braddon shows that Victorian self-help ideas may sound fascinating, but they can be misapplied in her construction of the self-made man character who is discovered to be a criminal mastermind. Also, drawing on gender criticism related to studies of Victorian masculinity in literature, this article argues that Braddon’s construction of the self-made man figure helps to clarify a shift in Victorian perceptions of hegemonic masculinity. By elucidating the meaning of North’s rise and fall, Braddon shows that Victorian men are asked to display their economic ability in order to achieve a higher social status and maintain a dominant position in competition with other men, but once they do, they are immediately made to see that the given social norms of gender and class are not easily subverted or challenged.
