Objectives: This study aims to investigate whether nonsmoking behavior can be maintained for those who were in a forced smoking cessation environment in prison for long even if the forcibleness is removed after release, and to determine factors affecting re-smoking. Methods: Subjects are 88 adult males who smoked when in prison, lived at Forensic Hospital for 1 year or more, and were released around 6 months ago. This study defines re-smoking as the case of smoking a single drag from release to investigation. Results: The re-smoking rate of 88 people is 56%. The shorter the duration of forced smoking cessation, the higher the smoking cessation rate and the longer the duration of forced smoking cessation, the higher the re-smoking rate. Also, the higher the nicotine dependence and the less willingness to quit, the greater the risk of re-smoking. Conclusions: This study provides the basis for introducing a smoking cessation education program so that prisoners can recognize the benefits of quitting and have the will to quit.
