This study aims to unravel syntactic and semantic effects on structural priming that have not been clearly delineated in previous studies. We conducted two structural priming experiments, using two different methodologies widely used in the literature (picture description and sentence recall) and using Korean constructions that vary in syntactic structures (canonical/NP-eykey NP–(l)ulACC and noncanonical/NP–(l)ulACC NP–eykey orders) and in semantic types (-eykeyto and –eykeyfrom) independently. In Experiment 1 (picture description), we found a significant structural priming effect by syntactic prime types but not by semantic types. Experiment 2 (sentence recall) confirmed the results of Experiment 1 that structural priming is robustly modulated by syntactic manipulations but not by semantic manipulations. The present study adds support to the body of literature that showed structural priming is primarily a syntactic phenomenon. We discussed the results with reference to semantic theories and crosslinguistic differences.
