In Korean language classes, notable differences are found between heritage and non-heritage learners of Korean in terms of their language usage, pragmatic ability, and style shifting skills. These differences stand out in their oral presentations markedly. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the style differences between heritage and non-heritage learners of Korean in their oral presentation. For the analysis, video recorded oral presentation data were used, which were collected in 2005, 2006 and 2008. The study utilized qualitative interpretations to attempt explicate the style variation between two groups. In addition, quantitative analysis such as frequency analysis was used for this study. It is generally accepted that heritage learners have developed oral proficiency in Korean through parental and community support in very casual situation thus there is a tendency that they are relatively fluent in daily conversation. The oral presentations in the classroom, however, require formal register and ask learners to use different styles other than daily conversation. The findings of the present study are as follows: Errors were found some parts of heritage learners’ presentations, which are related to formal presentation register. On the other hand, non-heritage learners revealed different kind of style shifting problems from heritage learners, which are not suitable for academic oral presentations. Therefore this style shifting could result in problems on delivery or lead to miscommunications with audience so that studies of style are in need of special treatment in classroom instruction.
