Guiding the major drama discourses, Hyun Chul was a leading dramatist in the early 1920s undetermined age of Korean drama history. He appeared in Chosun's cultural circle in the blooming age of Korean modern drama. He established “Art School(藝術學校)” produced actors and actresses, and published a lot of articles on drama discourses. And he also translated foreign art history and plays into Korean language. To define the denotation and connotation of drama in Korean language was the most emergent work to introduce and translate drama. Hyun Chul not only translates Western plays and drama theories, but also recreates the western model in the form of nationalism especially influenced by “Culturalism” and “Reformism” main academic currents of the age. However there were harsh tensions in the importing process of modern drama through the filter named Hyun Chul, because various heterogeneous forces blocked the way of importing. I think that this paper focusing on Gaebyuk(開闢) the main media producing and distributing Hyun Chul's drama theory could unveil this tension. Hyun Chul's drama theory was a project to build up a new modern subject. He wanted to establish the independence of Chosun and the people of Chosun in the realm of “Reformism”. To him “Reformism” was a theoretical clue mediating the individual and the nation.
