By framing the author’s Salpuri performance in the Midwestern United States as a site of auto-ethnographic exploration, this paper sheds light on the issues of identity, race/ethnicity, and politics that a migrant dancer constantly negotiates within the self and with others. The paper focuses on two main discussions. The first part of the paper speaks how dance becomes a means to express cultural/national identity for the author living overseas. The rest of the paper discusses how Korean traditional dance movement, costume, and race/ethnicity can operate as visual marks to separate the author from the Western audience as their “Other” – even temporary. In sum, the Salpuri performance demonstrates how identity, power, and politics intermingled with the representation of Asian (Korean) dance and body in Mid-western theater context.
