This paper aims to examine the characteristics of dance criticisms in the 1990s --especially from 1990 to 1994 -- thereby exploring causes and clues of social problems of dance criticism. I discuss the reasons and types of art criticism, drawing on the arguments of John Hospers and Jerome Stolnitz. I investigate considerations for dance criticism, and analyze the focuses and characteristics of dance criticisms written by 5critics. As some of their criticisms show subjective evaluations without sufficient evidences, I suggest that with both the intrinsic and extrinsic knowledge of dance, critics need to evaluate dance work.
