This study discusses objectivisim embedded in traditional writing formalities and the ideological bases of alternative narrative styles. Acknowledging the impact of qualitative researches and postpositivism on present-days scholarship at large, I suggest that the Korean dance scholarship needs to consider and make use of alternative narrative styles. Historical background of the so-called scientific language shows its specific historical and cultural contexts. The idea of scientific language was formed around the concepts of objectivity of meaning, universal communication, and true knowledge. As the paradigm shift from positivism to postpositivism occurred, objectivism of standardized writing formalities met challenged and criticism. One of the objections to standardized writing formalities is that the perceiving subject cannot be separated from the experienced thing/events. Two exemplary alternative narrative styles, phenomenological description and oral history, center on the idea of subjectivity of understanding. Phenomenological description actively reveal a researcher’s personal history, bias, and preconceptions. Oral history points out new values of memory, which might be contaminated and distorted. By discussing the ideological background of alternative narrative styles, I expect this article to help enriching the landscape of Korean dance scholarship.
