The purpose of the study is to investigate the characteristics of Hindu represented in Marius Petipa's La Bayadère and to re-consider the value of the work. The methodology for the study is to analyze its relevant dance literatures, and video materials, released in 1991, produced by Kultur International Films, Inc. The characteristics of Hindu represented in La Bayadère are shown in two aspects - religious․mythical aspect and institutional․ideological aspect. First, in the religious․mythical aspect, the Hindu's admiration of “Agni (the God of Fire),” “Soma (the hallucinogenic plant)” and “Indra (the God of Warrior)” is staged on the every act of the work, particularly in the “Fire Dance,” “the Dance of Golden Idol,” “Drum Dance, and so on. Second, in the institutional․ideological aspect, the Hindu's Caste is represented in the role of the temple dancer, while Nikya is dancing for blessing to a married couple in Scene 2 of Act I. The “Samsara” - the cycle of reincarnation, and the “Karma” - the retribution for the deeds of a previous life, are based on Nikya's decision to kill herself without being afraid of death.
