The thesis discusses about modern dance choreographers' creative processes with their dancers' bodies. First of all the choreographers of Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham are discussed in comparing with post modern dancers. Dancers' bodies utilized by both of two choreographers, are considered to be the bodies as media. The phenomenology of perception in the visible and the invisible are essential for the existence of dance. As an example, the visible perceived in Graham dance indicates the phenomenon of time, space, interacting force and physicality, on the other hand, the invisible means the significance of expressive movement, inner landscape and aesthetic contents. The dancer's body in modern dance is utilized as an expressive medium by Graham, Cunningham and Duncan. Also it is utilized as cognitive subject by post-modern dancers, and for Cunningham as an expressive purpose itself, action itself, and image. Cunningham's dance is considered to relate a new region of perception. That is, phenomenological application to Cunningham dancer's body should be discussed in terms of perception. phenomenological concepts of separation, perceptual freedom, freedom from meaning, and transition of perceptual method. The thesis clarifies the ideas of fact of dancer's body and its significance. Early modern dance choreographers tried to overcome the dichotomy of body and mind. For Cunningham dance the phenomenological concepts of separation, perceptual freedom, freedom from meaning, and transition of perceptual method are considered. Dance technique, perception in dance, conceptual meanings, and the dancer's body in the modern world, are considered to be one of the phenomenological realizations possible through collaboration and periodic style nowadays.
