Modernism, in fact, has been regarded by many to be rather disconnected from ballet itself due to its avant-garde and experimental movement of the 20thcentury across each field of arts. in its radical intention to be free from the strict formalism of traditional ballet, however, the form of ballet still existed as the groundwork for new choreographic methodology. This research is to show how La Sacre du Printemps incorporates and internalizes modernism to suggest its aesthetic elements different from those of other classic ballets. The results of the research are as follows. La Sacre du Printemps, by excluding the visionary beauty and Divertissement of traditional ballet and putting its emphasis up on human instincts, caused a sensation during its period. The results of the research are like the following: First, the musical elements and bodily motions of La Sacre du Printemps, whose theme is inspired by primitive motifs, shows some stylistic characteristics of primitivism in a barbarian, grotesque and repeated way while focusing on human instincts and inside. It overcomes traditional ballets’ limitation of bodily expressions by incorporating the rhythmic calisthenics of Emile Jaques–Dalcroze. Second, not only doest it express a naturalistic reality by putting aside the illusionary beauty of traditional ballets, but it is also free from divertissements, which were previously thought to be hard to be eliminated. Its dancers exist as objects, i.e. moving tools, not as human subjects. Their irregular and secular motions exclude ostensible decorations or exaggerative deceptions. Third, ugliness, which is contradictory to the basic principles of academic dancing, is accepted in this work as something representing occult-artistic rituals and groups while the cycle of reincarnation is expressed through its circle dance. While a minimalist contrapuntal composition is adopted, it relies on the basic plot of traditional romantic ballets. Vaslav Nijinsky La Sacre du Printemps is an original masterpiece breaking from the frame of traditional ballets, making its contribution to suggesting the new genre of ballet called ‘modern ballet.’ Its modernistic, experimental and avant-garde characteristics gave birth to its progressiveness and creativity, which, in turn, is thought to further grow and develop the world of ballet.
