Objectives: Many people visit the forest which has lots of health-healing factors. We investigated the terpene amount and analyzed its correlations with meteorological and environmental factors in Mt. Mudeung. Methods: The terpene amount was investigated at 11 main trails using stainless steel tube packed by Tenax TA (150 mg) and Carbopack B (130 mg) between March and November in 2012. Terpene amount of 20 species (α-pinene, camphene etc.), and meteorological and environmental factors were investigated in the field. Results: A total of 16 species of terpene were released from the forest. The highest total terpene amount was 2,080 pptv and was detected at the site of Chamaecyparis obtusa, nearby the 1st reservoir in Mt. Mudeung. Terpene concentration at the forest was 9 to 23 times higher than at the city area. Total terpene amount has positive correlation with temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and oxygen (p<0.01) with R2 of 0.345, 0.369,0.591, and 0.145, respectively, between April and July. Wind speed and solar radiation at the forest has negative correlation with the terpene amount but statistical significance was not observed. Conclusions: This study suggests that the amount of terpene in Mt. Mudeung is higher, so the visitor can enjoy a therapeutic walk in the forest with potential health-healing effect.
