Background: Children of atopic parents are at increased risk of having atopy. It is not clear whether or not there are concordant skin test results in nuclear families with atopy. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine concordances of skin test results in parent and child pairs with atopy. Method: We studied 133 father-child pairs with atopy and 120 mother-child pairs with atopy. Concordance of skin test results for 12 common aeroallergen extracts (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus: D.p., Dermatophagoides farinae: D.f., cat, dog, Aspergillus, Alternaria, oak, alder, rye grass, ragweed, mugwort, cockroach) was analyzed. Result: There were concordant results for cat, dog, rye grass, ragweed, mugwort, cockroach allergens in father-child pairs, and for cat, dog, ragweed, mugwort, cockroach allergens in mother-child pairs. As for the allergen groups, there were concordances for animal dander group, pollen group, cockroach group in both father-child pairs and mother-child pairs. Conclusion: The results suggest that skin test results are concordant for specific allergen sensitization in nuclear family. Further studies including gene study and twin study are needed to confirm genetic predisposition of specific sensitization.
