This study was conducted in order to apply a beauty therapy program to demented elders aged over 65 under long-term care at a geriatric hospital and examined its effects on their cognitive function and mood change. The period of experiment was from April 10, 2010 to June 16, 2010, and the beauty therapy program was applied through 11 sessions for 11 weeks and one session per week including a pretest and a posttest. The subjects were 16 elders in the experimental group and 17 in the control group, so a total of 33. The experimental group participated in the beauty therapy program for 9 weeks, and the control group did not. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The experimental group’s MMSE-K showed a decrease after the beauty therapy program but the difference was not statistically significant. The control group’s MMSE-K did not show any statistically significant difference. 2. In the results of comparing the difference in cognitive function between before and after the beauty therapy program in the experimental group and the control group, no statistically significant difference was observed. This shows that the variation in cognitive function was not different between the experimental group and the control group. 3. After the beauty therapy program, the experimental group showed a significant mood change in all of negative emotion, active pleasant emotion, challenging pleasant emotion, and non-active pleasant emotion. This suggests that the beauty therapy program influences the demented elders’ mood change. 4. After the beauty therapy program, the control group’s mood change was not significant in active pleasant emotion, challenging pleasant emotion, and non-active pleasant emotion but significant in negative emotion. This suggests that negative emotion increases over time in demented elders. 5. In the results of comparing the difference in mood change between before and after the beauty therapy program in the experimental group and the control group, statistically significant difference was observed. This shows that the variation in mood change was different between the experimental group and the control group.
