In the new millennium, after going through the confusion of values of loss of ego-identity, people have begun to see that being different from others is valuable. Thanks to this trend, they have attempted to express liberal and subjective personalities away from the concept of traditional beauty and have searched for aesthetic values. In the process, they have accepted ‘Kitsch’, which pursues a shocking and stimulating bad taste. Considering the fact that makeup is a practical and functional tool to express contemporary realities, Kitsch makeup, which denies traditional values of beauty, has a significant impact on the general public. Kitsch makeup has recently been in vogue by TV and movie stars, which means that the Kitsch style is now a mainstream trend. Therefore, this study has attempted to reveal the aesthetic characteristics of Kitsch makeup through an understanding of Kitsch and an analysis of Kitsch makeup expressions.
According to the investigation, unique and experimental Kitsch makeup was observed in fashion collections, presenting genuine freedom away from the conventional concept of beauty. From the Kitsch makeup of the TV and movie stars who set the trend, heterogeneous and non-standardized aspects were found. The correct understanding of the concept of theory of Kitsch would make it possible to come up with new ideas. In addition, a better understanding of Kitsch makeup could help people create more diverse makeup.
