A Gram-negative, motile by tuft flagella, obligatelyaerobic chemoorganoheterotrophic, sphere-form bacterium,designated IMCC3135T, was isolated from the Antarcticsurface seawater of King George Island, West Antarctica. Thestrain was mesophilic, neutrophilic, and requiring NaCl forgrowth, but neither halophilic nor halotolerant. The 16Smost closely related to genera of the order Chromatiales in theclass Gammaproteobacteria. The most closely related generashowed les than 90% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarityand included Thioalkalispira (89.9%), Thioalkalivibrio (88.0%-89.5%), Ectothiorhodospira (87.9%-89.3%), Chromatium(88.3%-88.9%), and Lamprocystis (87.7%-88.9%), whichrepresent three diferent families of the order Chromatiales.represented a distinct phylogenetic lineage in the orderChromatiales and could not be asigned to any of the definedfamilies in the order. Phenotypic characteristics, includingprimarily non-phototrophic, non-alkaliphilic, non-halophilic, andobligately aerobic chemoheterotrophic properties, diferentiatedthe strain from other related genera. The very low sequencesimilarities (<90%) and distant relationships between thestrain and members of the order suggested that the strainmerited clasification as a novel genus within a novel familyin the order Chromatiales. On the basis of these taxonomicGranulosicoccusantarcticus gen. nov., sp. nov., in a new familyGranulosicoccaceae fam. nov. Strain IMC3135T (=KCCM42676T=NBRC 102684T) is the type strain of Granulosicoccusantarcticus.
