Rhizobium and related genera are soil bacteriawith great metabolic plasticity. These microrganisms survivein many diferent environments and are capable of elicitingthe formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules on legumes. Thesuccessful establishment of symbiosis is precisely regulatedand requires a series of signal exchanges between the twodensity-dependent gene regulation. Recently, increasing evidenceindicates that rhizobial quorum sensing provides a pervasiveregulatory network, which plays a more generalized role inthe physiological activity of free-living rhizobia, as well asduring symbiosis. Several rhizobia utilize multiple, overlappingquorum sensing systems to regulate diverse properties, includingconjugal transfer and copy number control of plasmids,exopolysaccharide biosynthesis, rhizosphere-related functions,to reveal the wide range of functions under quorum-sensingcontrol.
