Marine bacterium Hahella chejuensis KCTC2396 simultaneously produced red antibiotic prodigiosin andundecylprodiginine. A complete set of the prodigiosin biosyntheticgene cluster has been cloned, sequenced, and successfullyexpressed in a heterologous host. Sequence analysis of thegene cluster revealed 14 ORFs showing high similarity to pigand red genes from Serratia spp. and Streptomyces coelicolorsimilar to that of pig genes. These genes were named hap forHahella prodigiosin, and determined to be transcribed as asingle operon, by RT-PCR experiment. Based on the hap genemutagenesis experiments and comparative analysis with pigand red genes, we propose a prodigiosin-biosynthetic pathwayin KCTC 2396.
