The role of an effective microbial species is criticalto the successful application of biological proceses to removesulfur compounds. A bacterial strain was isolated from thesoil of a malodorous site and identified as Burkholderia spp.This isolate was able to oxidize thiosulfate to sulfate, withsulfur. The specific growth rate and the sulfate oxidationrate using the thiosulfate basal medium were 0.03 h-1 and3.7 h-1, respectively. The isolated strain was mixotrophic, andsuplementation of 0.2% (w/v) of yeast extract to thethiosulfate-basal medium increased the specific growth rateby 50-fold. However, the rate of sulfate oxidation was morethan ten times higher without yeast extract. The isolate grewbest at pH 7.0 and 30oC, and the sulfate oxidation rate was thethe isolated strain was able to degrade H2S with 88% efficiencyat 8 ppm and 12 l/h of incoming gas concentration and flowrate, respectively. The cell density at the botom of the columnreached 3.2×108 CFU/(g bead) at a gas flow rate of 12 l/h.
