To monitor the posibility of horizontal genetransfer betwen transgenic potato and bacteria in theenvironment, the gene flow from glufosinate-tolerant potatoto bacteria in soils was investigated. The soil samples treatedwith the leaf tissue of either glufosinate-tolerant or glufosinate-sensitive potato were subjected to PCR and Southernhybridization to determine possible occurence of glufosinate-bar (phosphinothricinacetyltransferase) gene, conferring tolerance to glufosinate.The bar gene was not detected from genomic DNAs extractedat diferent time intervals from the soil samples, which hadbeen treated with the leaf tissue of either transgenic or non-transgenic potato for 2 to 8 weeks. In addition, the level ofglufosinate-resistant bacteria isolated from the soil samplestreated with the leaf tisue of transgenic potato was similar tothat of the samples treated with non-transgenic potato after 4months of incubation at 25oC. The bar gene was not detectedin the genomic DNAs extracted from colonies growing on theplate containing glufosinate, indicating that the bacteria couldacquire the resistant phenotype to glufosinate by anothermechanism without the uptake of the bar gene from glufosinate-tolerant potato.
