To elucidate phylogenetic relationships of Phellinusand its related genera, nuclear internal transcribed spacer andmitochondrial smal subunit ribosomal DNA sequences fromdataset of two sequences increased informative characters andled to the production of trees with higher levels of resolution.Phylogenetic analysis of the combined dataset revealed thirteenevolutionary lineages and several unresolved species thatwere together subdivided into two large clusters consisting ofoligonucleate species and binucleate species. These resultscoincided with previous cytological, morphological, andmolecular studies. It is newly recognized that the Phellinuslinteus complex forms a sister clade to Inonotus, and thatFulvifomes Inocutis. The Phellinuslinteus complex of dimitic perennial taxa made an independentclade from Inonotus and suggested that hyphal miticity andfruitbody permanence had enough phylogenetic significanceto keep the complex within the traditional genus Phellinus.Taxa lacking setae were clustered into Fulvifomes, Phylloporia,Inocutis, and Fomitiporia, and the first three were closelyrelated sister groups, but Fomitiporia was a genus distantlyamong distantly related genera. Molecular evidence indicatedthat the ancestral nuclear type could be a binucleate feature,and that there might be parallel gains of branched setae andparalel loses of setae in the Hymenochaetales.
