This study assessed the possible role of diferenttraits in selected plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR)for improving wheat growth and yield under natural conditions.Rhizobacteria exhibiting 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate(ACC)-deaminase activity were isolated and screened for theirgrowth-promoting activity in wheat under axenic conditions.Five isolates belonging to Pseudomonas and one Burkholderiacaryophylli isolate that showed promising performancesunder axenic conditions were selected and characterizedfor in vitro ACC-deaminase activity, chitinase activity, auxinproduction, P solubilization, and root colonization. Theseisolates were then used as inocula for wheat cultivated undernatural conditions in pot and/or field trials. Significant increasesin root elongation, root weight, tilers per pot, 1,000-grain weight, with PGPR in the pot trials. Inoculation with these PGPR wasalso effective under field conditions and increased the wheatgrowth and yield significantly. However, the efficacy of thestrains was inconsistent under the axenic, pot, and fieldconditions. Pseudomonas fluorescens (AC50), which exhibiteda relatively high in vitro AC-deaminase activity, chitinaseactivity, auxin production, and P solubilization and moreunder the field conditions. Therefore, these results demonstratedthat AC-deaminase activity is an efficient parameter for theselection of promising PGPR under axenic conditions. However, additional traits of PGPR, including auxin production, chitinaseactivity, P solubilization, and rot colonization, are alsoimportant for selecting PGPR as biofertilizers.
