This paper aims to reveal the characteristics of the research network utilized during the 1970s and 1980s in Korea, in the hemorrhagic fever work performed by Ho Wang Lee (1928-present). Despite the relatively poor conditions affecting Korean scientific research, virologist Lee discovered a hemorrhagic fever agent called Hantaanvirus that many American, Soviet, and Japanese scientists had endeavored to find for years, without success. In this paper, I will argue that Lee overcame generally substandard Korean research standards and his own research limitations by establishing a competent and comprehensive research network. This research network was composed of national and international components, involving person, funds, facilities, materials, information and so on. I also will demonstrate that his research network evolved to levels of higher complexity, flexibility and interdependency among its components.
