In this study, aspects of language behaviors and characteristics of conversation styles of Japanese shown in conversation scenes of appointment cancelation were reviewed from the perspective of conversation strategies. The subjects were university students in Tokyo and Tohoku areas. Role play type of dialogues similar to natural conversation were recorded and analyzed. The conversation strategies were divided into opening dialogue, appointment cancelation dialogue and closing dialogue, and the appointment cancelation dialogue was segmented as ① stage to check the appointment before the cancelation ②implication of cancelation ③ apology according to cancelation ④ provision of reasons to cancel appointment and whether it is concrete ⑤ proposal to cancel the appointment and ⑥ provision of an alternative instead of cancelation. According to the analysis results, opening dialogues develop with the conversation subject transition while appointment cancelation dialogue prefer one-time conversational style such as appointment check, cancellation implications and provision of reasons. On the other hand, apology expression and alternative provision prefer repetitive conversation style and appointment cancelation opinion shows straightforward and determined expression. Finally, in closing dialogues, students in Tokyo closed dialogues with greeting or agreement and those in Tohoku area closed their conversation with apology and encouragement.
