This article provides a survey of key writings on Korea from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by western men and women who came to Korea for a wide variety of reasons as missionaries, a naval officer, diplomats, a travel writer, and a journalist. Their varied accounts of Korea are generally sympathetic and the views of their authors at odds with the views of the governments of their home nations, which were willing to sacrifice Korean independence for geopolitical reasons. The writings provide unique insights into Korea and its people and valuable historical information for this turbulent period when Korea opened itself up to the outside world only to be absorbed by the Japanese Empire before it could modernize under its own steam. Although the study of Korean history and culture must be firmly based on research into Korean source materials, these western writings provide fascinating supplementary material that not only tell us much about Korea but also about the lives, values and outlooks of their authors.
