The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural contents of the 3rd and 4th grade authorized elementary English textbooks, and to provide a useful guide for effective culture education in English education. The analysis of cultural contents was conducted in terms of four aspects: 1) the quantity of culture education, 2) activity types of teaching and learning, 3) types of culture, and 4) relations to the major considerations in teaching elementary students. The results of the study revealed several findings as follows. First,current English textbooks do not include enough content for teaching culture.
Second, they provide limited types of teaching and learning activities. Third,there is no needed connection between 3rd and 4th grades in three types of culture, which are products, behaviors, and ideas. Fourth, the relation between language learning and culture learning is relatively lower than other major considerations in teaching culture. Based on the findings, the study provides a language-culture integrated teaching model. In addition, several suggestions are made for teaching culture in elementary English curriculum.
