This research aims at improving the current English education system in a local Korean university. It is based on the critical awareness that the current English education system in Korean universities is not satisfactory despite a variety of efforts made by the universities. Three research objectives are set: to evaluate the environment of the current English education, to identify whether there are differences among different departments, and to provide the direction of improving the English education system in the university. The researcher collected and analyzed the data in two stages. Firstly, closed questionnaire was distributed to the 200 students from the university and 144 was collected. Secondly, an open-ended questionnaire was administered to 14 professors and was used to interpret the students’ responses. Based on the findings, it suggests that the current English language curricular be restructured to include the English subjects for academic purpose and occupational purpose. It also suggests that the student-oriented English courses for general purpose be provided and the supporting system reflecting students’ characteristics and demands be established.
