On Explanatory Power of Government Theory of Phonology -With a Special Reference to 'r'-Irregular Conjugation- Kim Jeong-Woo(Kyungnam Univ.)This paper has been written to investigate the true explanatory power of government phonology for the description of so-called /r/-irregular conjugation. For the preliminary step towards the target, the present author has proposed 4 prerequisites for the successful description of the conjugation in question: the inclusion of the key part of irregularity itself into the solution, the extensive explanation of the related 3 classes of conjugation, the satisfactory explanation of new-generated form, and the observation of general principles of phonological theory. The revised solution (13.c) based on government phonology could be esteemed to satisfy the above 4 prerequisites without any violation at all. It has satisfactorily reflected its irregularity by introducing non-linear module and representing syllable structure in its underlying scheme, and succeeding in explaining some alternations of the related 3 classes and the generation process of the new form, and finally observing general principles of phonological theory.
