Hye-Joon YoonBy reading Dickens's Bleak House in the company of contemporary anti-Chancery pamphlets, such as the Chancery Infamy or The Court of Chancery; Its Inherent Defects, we aim to do the following: first, to show that the "source" of Bleak House cannot be reduced, as John Butt claims, to the 1851 articles in the Times; second, to delineate the range, scope, and depth of the "topos" (understood in the sense Ernst Robert Curtius gives the term) of Chancery as upheld by different pamphlets dealing with the issue; and finally, to mark off the precise points of convergence and divergence of Bleak House with and from the pamphlets. If Dickens in Pickwick Papers and in the related articles of Household Words can be said to be more or less repeating the existing anti-Chancery topos--such as the commiseration for the Chancery prisoner or the view of Chancery as evil "machinery"--in Bleak House he constructs a comprehensive vision of society with the topos of Chancery, which stands for a deadly, consumptive economy from which no one is immune. Such uncompromising radicalism leaves Bleak House in a space and time of its own, where partial reform of the system, which were being implemented even as the novel was being written, can by no means be taken as a remedy.
