This thesis reviews how the borders among the Three Kingdoms(Koguryo, Baekche, and Silla) changed between the 5th and 6th centuries in the Korean peninsula. By examining various previous arguments concerning the border changes around Han River, I have expressed my perspectives. The conclusion is the following:First, in the case of the areas near the lower reaches of Han River where today’s Seoul is located, the conquest of King Gwanggaeto of Koguryo in 396 caused the northern areas of Han River, which had belonged to Baekche, to become Koguryo’s domain. Second, as a result of the conquest of King Gwanggaeto, Chungju and Danyang, the areas near the middle and upper reaches of Han River(namely Southern Han River) became under Koguryo’s control. Third, although there has been a new argument that the areas near the lower reaches of Han River was still part of Baekche even after the capital of Baekche, Hansung, had been occupied by Koguryo in 475, it is still correct to say that these areas were owned by Koguryo. Koguryo pushed Baekche further south and occupied the areas in the south part of Han River. Fourth, a recent study has suggested the possibility of Silla’s advance towards the areas of Southern Han River in late 5th century, but the conclusion may change depending on how many ruins and relics, which can prove this theory, will be found in the future.
