Buddhist temples were essential elements to make up the capital at Goryo from the beginning of a dynasty. The Goryo court had to move its capital to the Kanghwa Island(江華島) from Kaekyoung(開京) aim to fight against the Mongols, and the court tried to imitate the old capital to new capital as well as they could. Temples which had been important in Kaekyoung were rebuilt at the Kanghwa capital(江都), and which had been connected with Choi Family that had supreme power(崔氏政權) at that time. After conclusion of peace negotiation between Goryo and Mongols, the Goryo court had to prepare for moving back to the old capital Kaekyoung, and Kanghwa capital had to be destroyed. In addition, with the destruction of Kanghwa capital, Buddhist temples rebuilt at Kanghwa were vanished. However, in case of temples at Kaekyoung which had been vanished and ruined during struggling against Mongols were repaired or rebuilt. At that time, the goal of recover of Kaekyoung was restored to the former state –before the transfer of capital-. And it indicated to recover Kaekyoung like its original looks which were systemized by Monk Doseon’s(道詵) geomantic theory and observed the King Taejo’s(太祖) system. This tendency of rebuild temple and capital after returning to capital had been connected with a knock-out Choi Family and retrieval and reinforcement of the royal authority. And it had also reflected the new international relations between Goryo and Mongols under the Yuan intervention.
