I study the background and character and figuration of cultural interaction between Goryeo and Yo(遼), and their cultural cognition. Their cultural interaction period is from AD 1020(Hyonjong 11) to AD 1125(Injong 3). During fifty years after Song’s Kooksinsa(國信使)(Moonjong 21, AD 1071) Song and Yo played the cultural interaction toward Goryeo actively. Through people’s visiting Kuran’s artisan craft, and Goryeo’s paper and inkstick and tea were exchanged. So two nations life cultures were affected interactively. In exporting books, Kuran presented Kuran-Tripitaka(契丹大藏經) to Goryeo. Goryeo gave Eeicheon’s writings. To strengthen emperor’s power domestically Yo developed Buddhist culture. To have hegemony abroadly he supplied his own cultural goods to Goryeo. Goryeo had his plural conceptions of foreiners on his native cultural base. Moonjong and Sookjong led cultural competition between Song and Yo. With Song, Eeicheon exchanged Sutras and had friends. With Yo he gave and took only Sutras besides thinking for Dojong. Goryeo completed national institution on Dang and Song, imported only Buddhist Sutras from Yo. Cultural interaction between Goryeo and Yo was done almost through official tribute(朝貢) Kooksinmool(國信物) envoy trade(使行貿易).
