In Daegu, the movement against the Korea-Japan Agreement was developed from March 1964 to July 1965. The central power of the movement was college and high school students. Students shared the recognition that Korea and Japan should recover the relationship and cooperate each other in the situation developing so tensely. Students saw that the agreement between two countries did not just follow the unilateral necessity and demand of Korea, but Japan also pushed forward with it according to its own security and economic necessity. Therefore both countries should arrange the bygones through mutual reconciliation on the equal ground they supposed. They criticized, however, that the Korean government is promoting the agreement not through a formal process, but through a side diplomacy in such a humiliating low attitude, while Japanese government still maintains the imperialistic attitude far from any reflection or apology. Students warned the advent of new-imperialism that would subordinate Korea economically by the conclusion of the agreement, asserted the establishment of national economy based on the formation of national capital and branched out of the nationalism the Park Jung-hee regime advocated. The protest against the agreement between Korea and Japan assumed the feature of democratic movement. At that time when the Park Jung-hee regime’s illegality, corruption and undemocratic nature were disclosed, students criticized the regime at the front. Being afraid of the residents’ emotion of the regime and the adverse winds due to it, they did not demand the departure or decampment of the regime on full scale. But it was significant that the protest presented people the momentum to recognize anew the regime and made a starting point and a model of democratic movement.
