This essay explores the modern consciousness of Janie Crawford, the protagonist of Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937) by Zora Nelae Hurston. If critical attention on this text has been centered on Hurston’s nostalgic imagination of the black cultural past in the rural South, this paper is an endeavor to situate Janie within the context of modernity. Pursuing recent discourse on the gender of modernity by scholars such as Rita Felski and Pamela L. Caughie, this paper attests that Janie is a modern woman by shedding light on her mobility and migrations. Specifically, Janie’s dreaming of the horizon is resonant of the modernist tradition, conveying a sense of hope and change for the future while Janie’s mobility fosters as well as represents her modern consciousness. As Janie, an isolated being without family ties, moves around from one place to another, she escapes the traditional normative bounds of black womanhood in terms of race, class, and gender. Thus, this essay offers a segue into rethinking about black woman’s experience and historical consciousness of modernity through the romantic journeys of Janie Crawford.
