Michael Winterbottom's adaptation movie Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story is not a conventional adaptation but an ingenious one, taking the form of a meta-cinema that is analogous to the self-conscious narration of Laurence Sterne's original novel. The movie consists of a film-within-a-film that represents the birth episode of the novel and a mockumentary that represents the process of making that film-within-the-film. And Winterbottom employes the birth motif as a link between the film-within-the-film and the mockumentary, implying that the filmmaking process is metaphorically a labor process. In the film-within-the-film, Winterbottom represents childbirth as exclusively a women's experience through effective visualization of the impotence of men in the event of Tristram's birth. Winterbottom also represents the birth of Steve Coogan as a responsible actor and family man in the mockumentary. Moreover, the rubber womb with a transparent window, a cinematic equivalent to the "Momus's glass, in the human breast" in the original novel, expands the labor metaphor for the filmmaking process into the uterine metaphor of the rubber womb-as-camera. With a surprising revelation that the filmmaking scenes have been the part of the film-within-the-film, the final sequence of the entire movie reinforces the uterine metaphor.
