Detective fiction displays an idealized version of masculinity through the representation of a male detective. It also transforms undesirable masculinity into ideal one. Focusing on the case of Walter Hartright in The Woman in White, this paper examines how detective fiction reconstructs masculinity. Walter, originally an effeminate drawing-master, takes on the role of detective to defend Laura Fairlie, an ideal British woman threatened by the criminals, Sir Percival and Count Fosco. Since detection is driven by a desire, classified as masculine, to know the truth behind the crime, Walter turns into a detective armed with such masculine qualities as independence, rationality, decisiveness, and bravery in the process of solving the mysteries surrounding the crime. Walter solves the crime by revealing Sir Percival’s illegitimate birth and Count Fosco’s membership in the Brotherhood and restores Laura’s legal identity. And the project of reconstructing Walter’s masculinity is completed by his accession to patriarchal power by marrying Laura.
