The relation between Focus and stress. Focus is a complex phenomenon. At a first attempt, it can be defined as a pragmatic phenomenon, but in this article, I discuss some issues concerning the relation between Focus and stress. Various papers of the early Seventies pointed out that there is a correspondence between the location of sentence Focus and the location of sentence stress in English. Both Focus and main stress are placed at the end of the clause. Stress always falls on the most embedded position of the focused phrase. In this sense, focal stress is subject to the NSR as reformulated by Cinque(1993). A prosody-based approach is only able to explain information Focus, so contrastive Focus has to be explained in a different way, which takes into account syntactic movement. The main problem for a single account for Focus within a prosody-based approach, therefore, is the fact that such an approach cannot explain Focus movement.
