The invisible real protagonist of Orlando furioso of L. Ariosto is Amor, the god of love, who dominates prepotently the numerous and various love affairs narrated in this vast poem, including the madness of Orlando. Far from the medieval chivalry and so-called courtly love, almost every episode presents very extreme and absurd form of love, which reveals the humanistic conception of love and the modern mentality of the High Renaissance. And Ariosto narrates with ironical tone the multiple aspects of love mainly connected with secular desires and, subsequently, with its derivatives like hate, jealousy, treason, vengeance etc. Ironically enough Angelica seems to select the most simple, modest and real love after having fascinated innumerable Christian and Islamic famous paladins and kings, and caused many serious events; she falls in love with a humble wounded soldier Medoro, marries him, and returns to her kingdom in order to bestow him the crown.
