The article devoted to the problem of «bilingualism». Bilingualism is a multifold complex problem, that is why, the author provides various classification of this concept. For example, the distinction according to age, according to four stages of language skills, according to the number or groups, who speaks in that language, etc. Russian Federation is a multinational state, so the National-Russian bilingualism is widely known and studied. Republic of Buryatia as a subject of Russia is also considered part of the multinational - dominated regions Buryat- Russian and Russian - Buryat bilingualism. Nowadays the problem of the Buryat language preservation is resolved by the activities of national schools and family. The family plays an important role in this process. The result of a policy of building a united Soviet people without any social, ethnic, linguistic differences, was a whole generation of natives Buryats not speaking the language of their ancestors. That is why it is very difficult for modern parents to transmit the Buryat language to the next generation. This situation is typical both Buryatia and other republics of Russia. The author speaks about the measures for preservation of mother tongue. Joint activities of the institute of family and government will improve language situation.
