This study tries to show the characteristics of the concepts of contrast through the two contrastive conjucts “зато” and “но” which express concessive meaning. "Зато" contrasts two aspects of an object or two independent situations, in which the undesirable aspects of an objects or situation are followed by the desirable aspect of an object or situation and compensated by them. In many previous works, it was shown that typical "несмотря на" and "хотя” concessive constructions can be replaced by contrastive “но” constructions. But in my opinion it is just analogy caused by regarding two different aspects of "contrast" on the same dimension. Because contrast acts on the different dimensions in concessive constructions and contrastive constructions. In the concessive construtions, the concept of contrast is presented, while in the contrastive constructions, the concept of contrast is asserted. Cause-effect relations in the concessive constructions is based on the topos which is located independently from the linguistic structure and can be decided according to the shared knowledge between speaker and hearers, while cause-effect relations in the contrastive constructions is based on the intra-textual structure and moreover it is decided by speaker's the subjective attitude toward the situations. The reason why, in some cases, contrastive meanings are understanded as concessive meaning is that the concepts of contrast and cause-effect relations which are common elements of both constructions, are considered to act on the same dimension.
