The main purpose of this thesis is to introduce Guan Yongji's opinion on Local Literature and Literature of Huabei Area Controlled by Japan, which are unfamiliar to Korean scholars and, by extention, to evaluate the importance of his ideas for Local Literature in 1940's Chinese literary world. The earliest Local Literature of Chinese Modern Literature was born in mid 1920's. After the 1930's, Chinese Modern Local Literature was converted into Rural Novel, which was influenced by the Left Wing's theory. In Chinese Modern Literature's history, the most common interpretation is that the Local Literatures were heavily influenced by the Rural Novels from the areas liberated by the Chinese Communist Party in 1940's. But Guan Yongji's Local Literature brings up the need to reconsider these autocratic interpreted views on literary history. He published <Raise the flag of Local Literature>, one of the most important works of his literary criticism, an strong illustration of raising that need. In it he shows that there was also another kind of Local Literature in the 1940's, and the Rural Novel of the liberated areas were not the only one. Guan Yongji's opinion on Local Literature also differs from Mao Dun's view on Rural Novel, He claimed to inherit from the 20's Local Literature and the tradition of‘5⋅4’'s New Literature spirit. He also asserted that writers should describe the painful reality of the 40's rural area in a realistic manner. His views were left under represented from the mainstream literary history , but his idea for Local Literature raised a need for the conception of New Local Literary history, which also includes Local Literature of Huabei Area Controlled by Japan. It also could give some light to a new subject matter for the study of Chinese Modern Literature. Generally speaking, enemy-occupied areas in Modern China means that some areas were dominated by Japan since the 30's. The Dongbei Area was Controlled by Japan after Manchurian incident in 1931, Huabei Area was Controlled by Japan after Lugou bridge incident in 1937, Shanhai Area was Controlled by Japan after late 30's. At that time, China was divided into three area; as enemy-occupied areas; Guomindang-controlled areas by Jiang Jieshi; and liberated areas by Chinese Communist Party. The Modern Chinese Literature study has been researched revolving around the literature on Guomindang-controlled areas and liberated areas by Chinese Communist Party, and relatively did not emphasis on the literature of enemy-occupied areas. But this thesis focuses on Guan's Local Literature in the Huabei Area, and through it, hopes to get a new awareness for China's reality in the 40's, especially through the realistic portrayal of the people who has suffered through war and starvation. It could be possible too, through the study for Guan's idea for Local Literature and the Huabei Area's literary world, broaden and diversify our history's awareness for the 40's.
