Wang Xi-lian, Zhang Xin-zhi, and Yao Xie have been regarded as the leading critical commentators of Hongloumeng coming after Zhiyanzhai, and they have made a significant contribution to the development of Chinese classical novel criticism. This study intends to elucidate the narrative casuality of Hongloumeng investigated by these three commentators. With a comprehensive perspective, these commentators put stress on the work's organic framework and deal mainly with the work's internal relationship as well as its moral vision based on value judgement. This fact has to do with the general tendency of Chinese novels which, unlike the European novel stressing usually the accurate and elaborate plot structure, put emphasis on the narrative development in accordance with the occurrence of events. Although these commentators are different in their individual opinions and points of interest, they have something in common in that their comments show the particular norms of Chinese classical novel criticism in terms of structure, consciousness of theme, and philosophy. With three of the analyzing tools of the particular condition of critical comment, the comprehensive reasoning structure of Chinese people, and the nature-oriented world perspective, this study tries to reveal what the epistemological background of their critical affinity is.
