Goodbye Solo is a KBS drama written by Noh Hee-gyeong which has been aired from March 1 to April 20, 2006 on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Noh Hee-gyeong has solid group of fans. This drama is about seven characters who meet together and take care for each others’ damaged hearts and the process of being healed. This drama has somewhat heavy theme which is to explore about human and our life. Therefore, it was distinguished from common trendy dramas and received many good critics as ‘a good drama.’ Despite those good reviews, it’s a shame that Goodbye Solo was not successful in popularity aspect because it failed to secure high viewer ratings. TV drama contains the meaning of ‘creation activity premised by acceptance.’ Therefore, we should consider creative perspective(art) and acceptance perspective(popularity) when we discuss about a TV drama. With these perspectives, I examined about the basis that <Goodbye Solo> was recognized with its artistic side, and the reason it failed to secure popularity in spite of that. As a result, I found out that the drama has mystery style of dramatic structure that the characters’ presents and pasts were crossing over in a multi story form. Thus, it could create balance of each character and completeness of structure through the process. It was the artistic side. On the other hand, it could not obtain high viewer ratings, namely, popularity because of the following reason. People can concentrate on a film or play in a theater. However, TV viewers cannot concentrate on a drama due to many obstacles in our daily life. Because of this watching environment, TV drama should make a factor to get viewers immersed in. It should attract the viewers every moment with unique ideas and sequences of various episodes. However, Goodbye Solo is lack of this kind of momentary absorption force. In addition, strange form and complex structure disturb immersion. The form is new but contents in it were conventional. Moreover, it illustrates fantasy as everyday life which is estranged from the contents and form. Theses are the reasons that the drama was not hailed by viewers. Goodbye Solo is valued under the current circumstance that similar dramas are overflowing and many dramas are filled with various spices such as nudity and violence to look outstanding. TV drama should have artistic value which goes beyond popularity, and it could be recognized as an ‘art’ and be advanced. However, it is not a virtue for a popular art to neglect public’s taste and code while pursuing only art. It is indeed a shame that this drama failed to secure popularity
